QuantumLeap Healthcare, a non-profit corporation that manages technology transfer from research into the marketplace, was established in 2005 as a collaboration between medical researchers at University of California, San Francisco and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. QuantumLeap’s mission is to accelerate technology transfer of high-impact research in clinical processes and systems technology into widespread adoption so that patients and physicians can benefit from the research as soon as practicable. The corporation seeks to support the development and implementation of innovative ways to deliver health care, specifically including efforts that focus on quality-of-care and quality-of-life issues and create initiatives to change clinical practices using Quality Improvement disciplines with a strong patient-centric focus.
The Founders of QuantumLeap recognized that good ideas and research projects in a University setting were often left “orphaned” at the end of a research project. These pieces of intellectual property frequently were left with no funds or organizational structure to move it forward to become accessible to doctors or patients to ultimately benefit patient care.
Given its proximity to Silicon Valley, QuantumLeap’s Founders developed a non-profit corporation modeled after Silicon Valley’s entrepreneurial venture-capital (VC) companies to incubate and grow these research projects into maturity. VC’s have expertise in:
- recognizing intellectual property with a potential for high impact,
- forming companies and management teams to grow ideas into products,
- providing funding in stages as the product or service matures, and
- identifying and forming partnerships to complement the initial idea or product.
This became the basic organizational model for QuantumLeap HealthCare Collaborative. QuantumLeap is a California based, 501 (C)(3) non-profit company dedicated to this goal of accelerating research projects into high impact products and services to improve patient care.
